IYC Juniors shine again

posted Mar 3, 2010, 10:50 PM by Imperial Yacht Club Sandvlei
The Dabby and Oppie B fleet sailed well in variable conditions at a Milnerton Aquatic Club this last weekend. It was an exciting weekend with sailing conditions varying from very strong on Saturday afternoon to fresh on Sunday.

The Dabby single class starred four sailors from IYC. Although Tim Manley had a shaky first race ending sixth, he recovered well with four 1sts to end top of the log. The fearsome Foreman brothers chased hard to get the next two positions. Although both Kevin and Jeremy both got a 1st, Kevin managed to squeeze five points in front to take 3rd place and Jeremy 4th overall. Christopher Thieme was the fourth IYC sailor in the field coming in at number 10.

The Dabchick two up class had the Jooste youngsters gunning for line honours. Connor and Famonn had a 1st in race 7, but the strong winds on the first day proved a little too much and they sailed in 2nd overall.

The only other class represented by IYC was the Oppie B class. These are a committed bunch of sailors and have proved that time at the tiller brings rewards. Of the six entrants in this class, Calvin Gibbs and Matthew Thorburn were the only two that persevered through three races in the strong winds on Saturday afternoon, and in turn gave them the top two positions, Calvin 1st and Matthew 2nd. Lee Gibbs, who had only completed his Novice 1 late last year, took up the challenge on the second day in more favourable conditions and came in 5th overall.

Well done to these sailors and thanks for flying the IYC burgee high and proud. Hopefully these tremendous results will inspire the "old" men and women of the vlei to dust off their vessels. We look forward to representation in the Mirror, Laser and Sonnet classes at upcoming regattas.

Thanks to MAC for a fun and exciting sailing weekend and look forward to being there same time next year.
