IYC update 20 April 2012

posted Apr 20, 2012, 2:45 AM by Damian Gibbs

Pelicans at ZandvleiZandvlei has been in the news recently with regard to water quality and the fish dying. There have been conflicting reports on the radio and in the media, but this morning I received permission to publish a report from the council. The report can be read at on the IYC website under News. In spite of the dying fish, it has been a wonderful week for residents who live at the vlei who witnessed approximately 30 Pelicans who spent a few days on the vlei. It has been many years since their have been more than the odd one or two on the vlei.

The committee is working on putting up honours and colours boards. Unfortunately there are no club records and SAS have lost their records of IYC members who received sailing colours. So, we are appealing to everybody who has received any colours for sailing, or have any records, please let us know ( We have a board put up ready for names and dates. Please pass this message on to anybody who you might think has any information to share.

The first winter cold front swept through recently and took it's toll on some boat covers. Please come down to the club this Sunday and check that your boats are secured and covers still intact. Well, if you're coming down and checking your boat, you might as well come and sail for the day.

This Sunday is a mini series. A few races (nornally two races before lunch and if possible another two after lunch) with lunch from the galley and a relaxing afternoon. Bring the family, little ones can play on the jungle gym while others are out on the water.

IYC is getting very busy with training. Kids Novice 2 and adults "Novice 1" course started last Sunday. It is fantastic to see so many new faces on the water and learning to sail. Although training in the cooler autumn and winter months is in colder water, the southerly winds are gentler (although you can have a howler like yesterday) and more productive for training. Oscar's Novice 1 course graduate on Sunday 22 April and we look forward to seeing fresh young faces on the water.

If you want to find out more about your class, or new to sailing and not sure where to start looking for a boat to sail, have a look these websites:,
