Port Owen River Race

posted Jan 3, 2011, 6:25 AM by Imperial Yacht Club Sandvlei
The Port Owen River Race is scheduled for 22 January 2011.

This event is a lot of fun as there are only two marks over a 12 km course and during the race you beat, fetch, reach and run as the river meanders. Coupled to this you have to contend with a ± 3 knot tidal flow making the sailing quite interesting and a lot of fun.

This year we want to make the event a interclub event with 3 boats per team / club and each club can enter as many teams as they want. The dinghies will be handicapped so teams consisting of different boats are possible as the handicap results will count.

There will be two races:
  • Race # 1 is a tune-up race at 11 am of about a hour with its own prizes (to get used to the conditions).
  • Race # 2 will be the main race at 14H00 over a distance of ± 12 km.
While the racing will be competitive, as it always is, it is essentially a fun event. It also has great spectator appeal as the yachts sail by very close to shore.

The evening there will be the famous POYC Weskus snoek braai. It’s a eat as much as you like meal for R 55-00 per person including dessert. If you will be arriving by Friday evening there is a meal at the POYC at R 45-00 p/p but prior booking is essential. There is also plenty of accommodation available in self catering from ± R 780-00 per night for a two bedroom unit or in guest houses around the Marina.

Entry: R 150-00 per team.
Camping: Available around the Yacht Club on grass at no charge.
Contact: Frank Stuyck 083 701 9434 after 6 January 2011. frank@portowen.com

Frank will need to know approximate numbers by Monday 17 January please. ( For catering purposes )

So come join the fun and let’s have a team or two from each Western Cape Club.
