Training Resources

Imperial Yacht Club offers a number of training courses for junior and adult sailors. Courses are run throughout the year, winter and summer, and notice of the next course will appear on our homepage, Facebook and in our newsletters.

Novice 1

Novice 1 course is designed to put your child on the water and to sail an Optimist with confidence. The basics of boat handling, capsize drill, boat parts, and basic rules of the water are covered. Two courses are offered a year, one starting in February and another starting around October each year. Other courses can be offered during the year depending on demand.

Novice 2

Novice 2 follows on from Novice 1. The same skills are covered in the first course and mastery of the basics of sailing is established. This is a critical phase in training where young sailors spend a lot of time practicing the basics and becoming confident on the water. This phase is important in preparation for learning how to race as the sailors can turn their focus from inside the boat to the water around them.

Novice 3

The follow on course from Novice 2 introduces racing at a club level. The start procedure, basic racing rules, interpreting the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions, and how to navigate a course are introduced and practiced.

Assisted Sailing

Often sailors complete a course but would like to practice further under the supervision of a coach. This is where the Assisted Sailing program offers value to junior sailors. The training is not about learning new skills and techniques, but perfecting what you have learn't so that you can the sailor can move onto the next stage with confidence.
